  18. <p>    While he was Ronald Reagan's Secretary of Housing and Urban
  19. Development, Samuel Pierce was known as Silent Sam. Now, amid
  20. a burgeoning scandal at HUD, he is courting a new nickname:
  21. Invisible Sam. The House subcommittee on employment and housing
  22. would like to question him again, but, says a member, "finding
  23. him is tough."
  24. </p>
  25. <p>    Investigators contacting Pierce's old Manhattan law firm
  26. were told he resigned in 1981. They would check his business
  27. address, but he doesn't have one. The searchers believe he lives
  28. in New York. Exactly where? Nobody knows. When he is in
  29. Washington, he stays with a friend. Who? Nobody knows. Why not
  30. subpoena Pierce? Well, says a subcommittee staffer, "you have
  31. to have an address." The HUD probe may drag on for months. So
  32. could the search for Silent Sam.
